So, this month we’re covering ways to improve your cyber security through two-factor authentication (2FA) and its different security method options. In particular, we’re going to focus on the security method, third-party authenticator apps.
Two-factor authentication has become a common and practical method of protecting accounts. It involves using two steps to access important online accounts, such as your email and banking.
The first step is typically a standard password. The second step can be a security question or a code. Codes can be generated through text, a phone call, an email or an authenticator app.
It’s essentially a way for you to set up your cyber security so that even if a hacker gets hold of your password, you still have a second layer of protection.
Third-party authenticator apps are one of the more popular and recommended 2FA security methods, and we’ve listed some of our favourites below!
Google Authenticator
Google Authenticator is free and one of the more commonly used authenticator apps. It adds a two-step verification process to your online accounts.
The app uses a password for the first step, and a code generated by the app on your phone as the second step. So, whether you’re signing into your email or any other online account, you’ll add a second layer of security through your phone.
Microsoft Authenticator
Microsoft Authenticator offers a similar two-factor authentication to Google Authenticator but requires set-up via a Microsoft account.
With this app on your phone, you’ll add 2FA security to your online accounts. The first step involves the app sending you a notification on your phone when you want to sign in, which you need to approve. The second step will require either a fingerprint, your face ID, or a PIN number.
This is a popular tool for businesses and those who use Microsoft Office products regularly at home.
Duo Security
Duo Security is a great tool for its versatility. It is available on both Apple and Android phones and offers a range of authentication methods so you can choose your preferred type.
The most common method is Duo Push, a quick notification to your phone that asks you to verify the log-in attempt. It’s great if you want 2FA, but want to keep it quick and easy when you log in. Verified Duo Push is similar, but with a unique code from the app for each log-in attempt.
The app also offers biometric methods, tokens, and passcodes, which can help you tailor your level of security to your needs.
There is a free version of this app, or paid versions for a small fee each month.
