Do you believe AI will become a basic utility like water, electricity and Wi-Fi?Speaking at the BlackRock Infrastructure Summit in March, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said AI would in the future be sold like electricity and water, metered by usage, describing a future where "intelligence is a utility." It’s a comment that lines up with how a lot of people already feel AI is heading. It’s become part of daily life for many, whether that’s asking a chatbot a quick question, using AI to help write an email, or having it built into apps you already use. As it gets cheaper, faster and more embedded into everyday tools, some believe it’s only a matter of time before it’s treated the same way we treat power or internet access, something you simply expect to have and pay for as you go.Others aren’t so convinced it’ll play out that way. Unlike water or electricity, AI isn’t a single standardised product; it’s built and controlled by private companies who set their own pricing, rules and access. There’s no regulator ensuring fair and equal access the way there is with traditional utilities, which raises questions about who gets left behind if AI becomes another bill to pay. For this group, comparing AI to a basic utility overlooks the fact that it’s optional for a lot of people, and not something everyone needs to function day to day, at least not yet.So what do you believe?
